This day would start with never ending vistas of mountain beauty and end with a mad dash to beat the weather over a few mountain passes. Continue reading Colorado Passes and Dodging Snow
Category Archives: Road Tales
In a fast-paced world where most long journeys are viewed from 20,000+ feet in a jet airliner, we miss out on the detail afforded by the low viewing angle of a motorcycle saddle. In this category I have stored a collection of interesting experiences gleaned from years of motorcycle touring. Each tale may describe a multi-week trip, a single day, or one sublime instant. Some tales even have photographic evidence. While I post these tales largely for my own amusement, I have been told they have inspired some to try motorcycle touring. If so, then that seems like a useful purpose. May they help you realize that the universe still holds many thoughts to consider, humor to be enjoyed, and wonders to behold.
Wind, Tank Test, Light Show, and Mexican Food
As a part of the ongoing effort to get to Fins and Vina’s SPITS party in California, the goal for today was very simple: get the rest of the Great Plains behind me. Continue reading Wind, Tank Test, Light Show, and Mexican Food
2017 SPITS – Introduction and Day 1
And herewith, my dear and cherished friends have screwed me over again.
They have conspired to schedule two wonderful fun-filled, food-filled, and riding-filled parties on consecutive weekends… on opposite sides of the country (and we’re not talking Lichtenstein). This will require me to haul ass from our home in Ann Arbor all the way out to California (through several mountain ranges), back home to pick up Karen, and then haul ass out to the Chesapeake Bay Area (the land of boats and righteous crab cakes), all in just over two weeks.
Damn them. Just damn them to hell. Continue reading 2017 SPITS – Introduction and Day 1

Blasting Home from SCUM

Maintenance, Tornado, and the Ride Down to SCUM
After my Mad Dash home from the ParTay, I needed to perform the 12,000 mile service on the Nightowl so Karen and I could ride down to the SCUM run. The first day of that southward ride had a little weather excitement. Continue reading Maintenance, Tornado, and the Ride Down to SCUM
Mad Dash Day Three
As described in the post from two days ago, I’m trying to get home in record time so Karen and I can ride down to the SCUM run in South Carolina next weekend. Yesterday’s challenges were heat and wind. Who knows what plagues awaited me today. Continue reading Mad Dash Day Three

The Mad Dash Begins
After two days of resting, hanging out with good friends, doing some electrical work (not on the Nightowl), and eating great food, it was time to head back east. Unfortunately, this leg of the journey would not be so leisurely as the one coming out. Continue reading The Mad Dash Begins
