ToutleRiverValley
A view of the Toutle River valley west of Mount St. Helens in Washington. When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, the river valley was filled with ash and silt. Foliage does not grow well on this sediment so it is readily visible on the valley floor. Everything in this photo was in the main blast area and was leveled when the volcano erupted. The grey ridge towards the upper left, shrowded in clouds, is Mount St. Helens.
