More Piston Scuffing

Click on a photo for a full sized (i.e., huge) image. Don't go there unless you've got high speed.
Note: First three photos are from the previous scuff episode with the cast iron cylinders.

FuckedFrontPiston

This is probably what was causing the clank-clank-clank sound while coming home from Dana and Andrzej's.
thumbnail
GettingFuckedRearPiston

The rear piston isn't nearly as bad, but definitely on the way to the same result.
thumbnail
ScoredFrontCylinder

Looking at the rear wall of the front cylinder. Plenty of nasty scoring that is deep enough that you can feel it when you run your finger over it. The seven light patches near the base of the cylinder is where the piston left pieces of it's skirt on the cylinder wall. Yeesh.
thumbnail
FrontPistonRearSkirt

Scuffing at mid skirt and the bottom edge of the skirt. Several trails of individual bits of contaminate carved into side of the piston. Not deeply, but evident in the horizontal pattern on the piston skirt. To the lower right, you can actually see the the bit of contaminate embedded at the end of its path.
thumbnail
FrontPistonFrontSkirt

More overall scuffing, but still minor compared to last time.
thumbnail
FrontPistonRightBoss

Right wrist pin boss for from piston. The wear on the top is not just burnishing. You can feel a slight lip with your finger. Note that front connecting rod sideplay was infinitely evil, somewhere around 0.135".
thumbnail
FrontPistonLeftBoss

Definite wear (easily evident to touch) at upper portion of boss. Note that front connecting rod sideplay was infinitely evil, somewhere around 0.135".
thumbnail
RearPistonRearSkirt

Some overall scuff wear along with individual striation tracks.
thumbnail
RearPistonFrontSkirt

Almost no scuffing, but lots of striation tracks. The dark bits aren't dirt or carbon. You can't feel them with your finger nor can you scrape them off with your finger nail. I don't know what they are.
thumbnail
RearPistonRightBoss

Slight burnishing, but not detectable with your finger. Note that rear connecting rod sideplay was reasonable, somewhere around 0.020".
thumbnail
RearPistonLeftBoss

Definite wear at upper side of boss. Easily detectable with your finger or finger nail. Note that rear connecting rod sideplay was reasonable, somewhere around 0.020".
thumbnail
FrontCylinderTopFrontWall

No obvious wear with some crosshatching visible throughtout. Small bright dots appear dark without the flash, but I can't feel them. Pits in the wall?
thumbnail
FrontCylinderRearTopWall

Vertical striations in mid-wall appear to be chemical stain and don't appear to be wear marks, but I could be wrong. Small bright dots appear dark without the flash, but I can't feel them. Pits in the wall?
thumbnail
DarkOrBrightDots

Closeup of the small bright dots that appear dark without the flash. These I could detect with my finger nail. but I couldn't budge them. Pits in the wall? I suppose I could tell with a dental pick, but I'd rather not try.
thumbnail
FrontCylinderBottomFrontWall

Some burnishing down low near the spigot opening, but otherwise clean.
thumbnail
FrontCylinderBottomRearWall

Slight scuffing at base of spigot, but otherwise clean.
thumbnail
RearCylinderTopFrontWall

Looks pretty clean.
thumbnail
RearCylinderTopRearWall

Some evidence of verticle striations, but I can't detect them with finger or finger nail. Another chemical stain appearance that could also be minor wear.(?)
thumbnail
RearCylinderBottomRearWall

Some scuff down low near spigot opening, but otherwise clean. Single vertical striation in center is not evident to touch.
thumbnail
RearCylinderBottomFrontWall

Wear down low and about 3/4 way up the wall. None of it evident to the touch.
